Aug 30, 2026 · The Way to School · Ssing-Ssing Racer
Run one round of Ssing-Ssing Racer and the kindergarten uniform and bag unlock in The Way
to School. Costumes unlocked in The Way to School are worn in Ssing-Ssing as they are. The two
games live at different addresses and in different folders — here is how they share one
wardrobe.
Ssing-Ssing Racer — on the complex path, get past them and you win
The decision: share the world
Settled on August 22. The second game's protagonist is the same kid, with the same
costumes. That is why the character went back to 3D (this
post) — Ssing-Ssing is 3D through and through, and a one-image character can't stand in it.
And we set a principle: the costume list has a single source, one file, and
Ssing-Ssing takes that file as is. The model files sit in one folder both games read. Add one
entry and the costume appears in both games at once.
One round unlocks it — one cookie
"Play one round of Ssing-Ssing Racer" is the unlock condition. The games can't read each
other's storage across addresses, but both are subdomains of molgamecat.com, so they share a
parent-domain cookie. When Ssing-Ssing finishes a round it sets one cookie; when
The Way to School starts it reads that cookie and records the achievement. No login needed. If
you are signed in, the achievement goes to the account too and unlocks on other devices.
Same character, different worlds — 3D or painting?
The Way to School's background is one painting; Ssing-Ssing's world is entirely 3D.
Apartment blocks are built in code, the road curves, the camera leans into corners, there are
shadows underfoot. 3D props were rolled back twice in The Way to School
(this post), yet 3D scenery succeeded in Ssing-Ssing —
and here is why. "3D or painting" has no single answer; it depends on which medium the
rest of that game's world is in. In Ssing-Ssing, everything from the character to the
scooter is 3D, so a 3D background is the matching medium — and standing a painting up there
would make a paper stage set.
The material was chosen by rendering three side by side — the pick was toon
shading. Tone mapping and post-processing were left off on purpose: put post-processing
over hand-painted-style textures and all it does is drain the saturation (we rendered it and
took it out). Draw calls sit at 50 against a budget of 60, and with 60 fps on a low-end phone
as the target, that budget is set up front and held.
Same engine, different rules
The two games share a skeleton — deterministic tracks, replay verification, accounts, the
leaderboard. The rules differ. The Way to School is about choosing the tile to step on;
Ssing-Ssing scores how close you dare to pass. It has three maps: the road to
kindergarten (3 km before the clock runs out), an endless riverside path, and an arena where
three laps of a loop decide who comes in first. Only the arena uses no seed — a
race track has to be the same every time so you can learn it and compete.
Ssing-Ssing's "shortcut" is a lesson from here too. Every judgement is laid over (distance,
lane), so drawing a genuinely shorter road in the world does nothing to the distance axis. So on
a shortcut, distance flows 1.42 times faster. If that conclusion isn't written
into the code, the next attempt starts again from "let's draw a really shorter road".
The Way to School's background, revisited
So is The Way to School frozen forever? At the end of August we designed a compromise: sky
and distant scenery stay one painting, and only the roadside flows as two rows of
painted cards. It takes "multiple rows, instancing, deterministic placement" from the 3D-prop
attempt and "painted material, no lighting" from the strip attempt, and adds the thing both
lacked — more than one row. Rows at different distances passing at different speeds is what
depth is. The code is in and flowed with placeholders; it stays off by default until the real
artwork arrives.
While this was being written, the two games also started sharing a friends list and
messages. You can only send a request to someone whose exact nickname you know, and
messages pass only between friends — we deliberately built no way for strangers to browse
for kids' accounts.
